Dermaviduals have a different physical structure to other skin care products and are unlike any other skin care you have used before. Dr Hans Lautenschlager created his products to contain DMS (Derma Membrane Structure) an ingredient that resembles the membrane structure of the natural skin barrier. This allows the skin products to be easily absorbed and accepted by the skin.
The main ingredient to these creams is Phosphatidylcholine (a soya derivative),which is more compatible with the skin than normal emulsions and is free from emulsifiers, preservatives or perfumes.
The product does not interfere with the outermost layer of the skin called the “stratum corneum” this is what we call Corneotherapy. It is essential to look after and maintain this protective barrier. Should this important function of the skin be broken down your skin will show symptoms of:
Dermaviduals can help achieve healthy uncompromised skin when we support the skins most important function, its BARRIER FUNCTION.
When we disturb this all important system and interfere with the barrier function of the skin a whole host of inflammatory skin conditions appear like acne, rosacea and a host of others.
The role of the stratum corneum (the skin’s outer layer) is to protect us against environmental hazards and prevent water loss from the skin. This is called TEWL, transepidermal water loss. When we break down this barrier function a whole host of allergens, irritants, microbes and pathogens enter the body through the skin.
Maintaining a natural PH of the skin is also important and we call this the acid mantle, this is imperative for the barrier function. If the PH of the skin rises it becomes alkaline instead of acidic. In response to this the stratum corneum releases inflammatory cytokines in an attempt to trigger more lipid production. Normally this would be a good thing and would help return the whole system to a healthy state.
However, if this cytokine cascade is continual, chronic inflammation sets in. The result is a very thin, leaky and permeable skin barrier.
Looking after PH of the skin will also filter out 70% of harmful ultraviolet rays that we are exposed to from sunlight every day.
The stratum corneum is like a brick wall. Lipids are important with keeping the bricks and mortar together. There are three types of lipid, ceremides, cholesterol and a long chain of fatty acids. These lipids work together to waterproof the skin and must be present together to form a protective impermeable wall. A good barrier defence in the right quantity of lipids will help prevent chronically inflamed skin like Dermatitis.
When the barrier function is compromised it is not enough to restore it with the use anti-inflammatory ingredients. It is important to return the barrier to its natural state with the help of Corneotherapy. Corneotherapy will generate the three lipids that form the permeability barrier to its natural state of balance. These lipids are identical to the Stratum Corneum layer, so it is like restoring your brick wall with the mortar.
Restoring the acid mantle will also turn off the inflammatory process and allow the barrier to start reforming. This will thus enable the antimicrobial defences to take place and decrease the penetration of allergens and pathogens.
